Several Frequently Asked Questions about the Pickering Rouge Canoe Club:
Why do I need to volunteer 10 hours as part of my club membership?
PRCC is a not for profit organization which greatly relies on its volunteers to help support us at events such as our Club Opening and Closing, Pickering Regatta, Rouge Regatta, fundraisers, assist with our PaddleALL program, BBQs, garage sale etc. We ask that members volunteer 10 hours per season, which can be done very easily and find that most members take such pride in the Club and its community that they offer even more. In lieu of volunteering 10 hours, members may choose to instruct us to cash their $100 volunteer cheque which is otherwise destroyed once the completed volunteer sheet is handed in at the end of the season. Camp registrations are excluded from volunteer requirements.
Do you rent boats?
PRCC does rent out our dragon boats on a seasonal or per session basis. This is a great way for local businesses and community groups to develop team building while enjoying the great outdoors. Please use our Contact Us page to receive more information on rates and times available. Please note that we do not rent out our canoes, kayaks or OC6s. To try out our fleet of canoes and kayaks, visit our Calendar of Events and look for our Open House dates.
Do you store boats for non-members?
PRCC does not store boats at either of our locations for non-members. This is mainly due to access restrictions requiring a staff member to be available to open and close our boat storage facilities. Member boat storage is based on program and space availability within our storage facilities. Charges may apply for storage.
Who can join?
Everyone, we offer programs for a variety of ages and abilities! Whether your interest is in finding a great summer camp for your children, recreational paddling, team racing, flatwater racing, Dragon Boating or Outrigger Canoe paddling, the Pickering Rouge Canoe Club has a program that is right for you.
Would you recommend this sport to children?
Yes, there is nothing better than spending the summer outdoors while enjoying a healthy activity with positive role models and friends. The whole family can, and often does get involved.
My kids are already involved in summer activities, what’s so special about paddling?
Youth at PRCC train with experienced coaches whose goal is to help the paddlers develop confidence and skills at his or her own pace. The emphasis is on safety, personal development and fun. The focus on individual goals makes paddling well suited to young athletes with developing ability, co-ordination and strength. Members can paddle in crew boats and singles, so it’s both a team and individual sport. Those who wish to try racing have many opportunities throughout the season, no matter what their ability level is.
What’s the best age to start paddling?
Some children begin as early as age 6 within our weekly Summer Camp Programs. Others have joined in their mid-50’s. PRCC provides introduction programs to suit all ages and abilities.
Do I have to buy my own equipment?
No, the Club provides all paddling equipment including boats, paddles, and PFDs. It is suggested that you bring a change of clothes and/or towel, water and sun protection. We do find that our seasoned paddlers will often want to purchase their own equipment as they become more experienced.
Do I have to race?
No, some members are not interested in racing and would rather just experience the benefits of living a healthier lifestyle in a fun and knowledgeable environment. Please communicate this with your coach.
